They inhabit their houses, their clothing, their bodies, their lives like Russian dolls, packed inside interiors freighted with pitchforks and ribs. They zip "bones into a person who drinks coffee by the bucket." Half object, half injury, the living "go crazy and propose." Lemieux's is a purgatorial world of couples--mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, lovers, husbands wives--enmeshed with and in pursuit of each other through surreal suburban landscapes. Lemieux's paradise is urban: "a city apartment with eccentric neighbors and no roaches," where true lovers "listen to jazz at night and if they have/ a telephone at all they'll keep their numbers unlisted." In "Courting," a woman exfoliates herself to the very bone while her partner asks "did you get a haircut or something." Beneath the poems' extravagant exteriors, heartbreaking sacrifice is reset like a broken bone by platitude: "What a blessing," says a nurse relieved of her duties. A dying mother says to the daughter who sacrifices herself: "You're my savior." What saves these poems from bleakness is their startling wit, electric language, and the satisfactions of precisely observed truth. Katherine Smith, author of Argument by Design A man whose garments lose their openings--buttonholes, armholes, socks and boxers fused shut; a son who, coping with his alcoholic father's death and his mother's depression, maps his house, his life, his world obsessively as a stay from oblivion; a woman whose desire to be noticed by her lover exfoliates her skin down to the bones: the characters in Lemieux's Blankness, Melancholy, and Other Ways of Dying move in a surrealistic world in which the only reality is absence. Breton says, "the whims of imagination alone [cause] real things." Only a poet in the height of her imaginative powers can fashion these darkly whimsical worlds that speak volumes about our human condition. Each poem opens a door to an alternate reality which enlarges and enriches the reader's known world, rendering it rife with possibility. Lemieux's superb narrative, lyrical, and imaginative gifts give voice to our deepest griefs and our need to be loved--but always with deftness, wit, and great empathy. As one of her characters reflects, "the best thing a person/could ever give you is an absence for you to fill." A stunning collection from a singular, unforgettable voice. Phipps, the daily liturgy of parenthood, aging, and sport yields a grounded faith, not a flashy one, a conversation with the triune God that deepens as it questions Him. As a late convert to hockey, Brian trusts in a game that "engages muscles you were unaware / you had." He plays when he doesn't feel like it, plays when it hurts, and plays when it's boring. I'm not much of an athlete, but Brian's use of hockey as a metaphor for spiritual practice makes sense to me as one who writes, plays music, or works in the garden every day. These practices can either pass with the hours, or they can become their own forms of prayer, repentance, and confession. And what is more mundane than doubt? Or as this poet challenges us to consider, what can be more holy? Brian engages and flexes his doubting muscles as well, writing in "The Sayings of Saint Thomas" that "After I stopped doubting and believed, Lord / and God, my believing led me toward more doubt." This is the doubt that purifies, that draws us closer to the truth even when we aren't so sure we want it. "I am still / no more than halfway," Brian writes in "Without Faith," "and less than earnest, afraid / to seek what I might find." In his earnest lack of earnestness, he finds so much and guides us to our own discoveries as well. I find great comfort and encouragement in the intimate honesty of Brian's poems, the way they illuminate and redeem daily life as a broken and beautiful precursor to "One Day," when heaven will appear as a never-ending sheet of ice ready to receive our "wholly embodied" souls. It's a heaven I want to visit, for I know even I will be welcome there in my clumsy, ill-fitting skates. -Tania Runyan

| Author: Brian G. Chronister's poems are short, but there is strength in their brevity. These are poems of the Holocaust and war, of families, survival, and the human spirit's desire to live. These poems take sharp jabs at history. They simmer with memory and who is responsible. How could this happen? Maybe when the lilacs bloom, there is hope. DAY FOR NIGHT, Richard Deming's searching new collection of poems, takes its title from the cinematic term for shooting night scenes during the day. With a complex lyricism, these poems often explore the ways that art, in whatever form, creates the possibilities of an address by which we hope to encounter other people even as it reveals the impossibilities of ever truly knowing others or ourselves. Haunting the poems in echoes and allusions is Shakespeare's Hamlet and that play's profound meditation on skepticism and the role of art in knowing the self. Here, a new calculus for the Bloomsbury set is refreshed by energy, imagination, along with natural strengths of craft and metrics. I love these characters recreated; I love reading their stories as they chase each line to new poetic mythologies. In 'Other Curiosities' Byro unleashes her true anarchism, turning fairytale to reality. This book is a starship with history and fantasy blasted to brilliance. It's the promise made, that poetry will always be on our side- soul, heart, intelligence- blown out of dark, landing right in our laps, just when we need it the most. Grace Cavalieri, Producer "The Poet and the Poem from the Library of Congress." Laurie Byro's lyrical collection offers a tour of art's afterlife, with a particular focus on haunted modernism. In The Bloomsberries and Other Curiosities, Virginia Woolf sings to the stones that will fill her pockets, Hart Crane makes an "epistle" of himself, and forests remember fictional heroes out of D.H. Lawrence. When she isn't looking upward at literature's "dandelion stars"-that is, in more personal poems also included here-Byro casts vivid spells against loss, reminding us that poetry is an art of memory, and of transformation. -Lesley Wheeler, author of Radioland With literary insouciance and metrical verve, Laurie Byro makes her debut with The Bloomsberries and Other Curiosities. Arranged like a diptych, the first half of the book opens with the Bloomsbury cast. Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Dora Carrington, plus D.H. Lawrence and T.S. Eliot, make guest appearances in Byro's witty, sensuous, thoughtful, flippant, but dead serious poems. In the "other curiosities" half of her lyrical, piquant book, Byro explores art and artists in elegant stanzas written from, of, and to contemporary poets and poems. With the wry, dry love notes of The Bloomsberries and Other Curiosities. this poet practices a sublime ekphrasis. It is the first history of the national poetry office, the U.S. poet laureate, highlighting the careers of Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, Gwendolyn Brooks, Robert Pinsky, Tracy K. Smith, Juan Felipe Herrera, and Joy Harjo at the nation's Capitol. It is also a history of how these state poets participated in national arts programming during the Cold War. Drawing on previously unexplored archival materials at the Library of Congress and materials at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Amy Paeth describes the interactions of federal bodies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with literary organizations and with private patrons, including "Prozac heiress" Ruth Lilly. The consolidation of public and private interests is crucial to the development of state verse culture, recognizable at the first National Poetry Festival in 1962, which followed Robert Frost's "Mission to Moscow," and which became dominant in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The American Poet Laureate contributes to a growing body of institutional and sociological approaches to U.S. literary production in the postwar era and demonstrates how poetry has played a uniquely important, and largely underacknowledged, role in the cultural front of the Cold War.

| Author: Amy Paeth

| Publisher: Columbia University Press

| Publication Date: May 16, 2023

| Number of Pages: 328 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 0231194390

| ISBN-13: 9780231194396

Those who want to study T. Solonche Solonche is productive and prolific, but that doesn't water down his poetry... He can compress a philosophical treatise into three lines... His epigrammatic tidy poems are philosophic gems. Solonche sees humor and encapsulates it; he frames a thought in perfect verse... He's playful and profound-the more he writes, the more he seems to know. Beneath the Solonche simplicity are significant social comments, and his goodwill reinforces the best in us. -Grace Cavalieri, Washington Independent Review of Books Solonche, an accomplished poet, employs various forms in this compilation, including haiku, prose poem, and free verse. The poems often imaginatively enter into the natural or material world via anthropomorphic similes... Many works have an aphoristic quality that recall Zen koans, and they can be playfully amusing or even silly... A strong set of sympathetic but never sentimental observations. -Kirkus Reviews The best feature of Solonche's poetry is its diversity. Everyone who encounters this volume (including the postman who delivers it to you) will find something in it to understand and remember-and a great deal to enjoy. -Tony Beyer According to Lord Polonius in Hamlet, "brevity is the soul of wit." In the poetry of J. R. Solonche, brevity, soul, and wit co-exist superbly. Start with any of his poems. You'll find, unlike much of what is written these days, the wit is never far from the surface. As for the brevity, imagine an appetizer that's as filling as a main course. And, after the meal, after the laughter, the soul will be what lingers. -John Grey

| Author: J. R. From the intimacy of the Sunday dinner table to the unforgettable image of a funeral gondola in Venice, these are poems that reach toward the world to meet it at the precipice. Navigating the uncertain terrain of loss and healing, Nash explores the interiors of heart and mind with the curiosity of a scientist and a poet's insistence of honoring the unknown. Parts Per Trillion brims with ghosts and gravity, sea glass and molecules, inviting us to take on a new name and a stranger's daring, to become "old-school gangsters" tossing careworn concerns off a pier. These poems take signs and portents seriously, deciding that wonder is a necessity as they ask us to break free of certainties and redefine what is plausible and possible. Giving us permission to forget what we know in the name of resilience and hope, this is language that claims the worth of each moment even when the evidence might suggest otherwise. Susan Moorhead, Author of The Night Ghost There are a trillion reasons, spoken and unspoken, to read Claudine Nash's new collection, Parts per Trillion. There is not one inert moment throughout this entire collection. Nash levitates, drifts and sinks, spins and swirls, stashes and slides. And we are with her all the way, whether we surrender to the absence of necessary words or sleep, or the presence of our individual ghosts; the quarantine of noise, silence, memory and emotion; or the discovery of heartbeats, vapors of sadness and our ability to slip between gaps and crevices into the small but well-ventilated spaces we crave and need. Nash's collection is sewn from words never spoken, and yet, she is able to gather a trillion transformed words. Climb aboard and glimpse the floating particles, neurons, atoms and an energy that can squeeze a ghost. Sherri Felt Dratfield, Author of Water Vigils and The City Claudine Nash's poems are moving microcosms in which a keen power of observation and playful imagination fuse with the minutiae of daily life to create deftly wrought lyrics. At its core, Parts per Trillion, asks metaphysical questions. From Permission Slip: "I wish to remain airborne/as long as possible. I grant myself permission to stuff my ears with wind and answer/only to my truest name." Parts per Trillion is fused with the magic of sound and the grounding temperament of science. This is a collection by an accomplished and sure poet. As Nash instructs, Please listen now, there's something I'm ready to say. And we are hoping. We are in the darkness. And we are striving for the light. In these precarious times we are living in, Miki's words embrace us with fierce love and welcome us home. Home to the Truth of our collective humanity and our individual sovereignty. These poems are a blazing torch guiding us to the place we all long to return to - our own hearts. A poet's job is not to write words that rhyme or sound pretty. A poet's job is to open up a passageway to healing, by speaking with power about the things that ail us, and with truth about how we can heal. This book does not just open up that healing passageway. It flings the doors wide open. Each poem opens the doors wider and wider, until there is no more room for the lies and deceptions that are at the root of the injustice, pain and fear we see in the world. Until the liberating light of truth can come flooding into our hearts unrestricted and do its healing work. In this book, challenging subjects like racism, sexism, prejudice, motherhood, womanhood, family wounding and love are unapologetically laid out on the table for us all to see. Miki names the real things that society tells us to keep hidden in the dark. With vulnerable-courage, she offers up her stories and experiences as soul medicine, so that we too may learn how to name the real things in our lives. So that we too, may heal. Pound's first translations of Proven al poetry were a way of penetrating an alien sensibility and culture and making it his own; they were also important technical exercises. Confronted with the problem of finding a suitable form and language for the Provencal experience, he condensed, deleted, expanded--the results were highly original works. Among Pound's early experiments were the studies of individual Provencal poets, each representing one of the qualities of Proven al culture that attracted him--Bertran is the man of action and Vidal is an example of the close connection between man and the "vital universe." Implicit in Pound's treatment of the past is his belief in the contemporaneity of these medieval values. This belief remains constant in The Cantos, although as the work developed it became clear that no single cultural framework could encompass it. Nevertheless, the medieval world remained the cornerstone of Pound's paradise--a brilliantly unified, vibrant world against which he could contrast the chaos and sterility of contemporary civilization. Luther Jett's newest collection, Watchman, What of the Night? bears witness to a world in turmoil, as tyrants rise with the warming seas, while entire generations are displaced by war and catastrophe. The poet asks, what centre can hold in this whirlwind night? Here are poems which speak of past calamities in order to hold up a lamp to pierce the present murk and fog in search of clarity. The sensual imagery and marvelous landscapes of the mind act as a stage for an odyssey of love, metaphysical discovery, memory, and personal transformation. -- Selected for the 2019 Poets House Showcase in New York City, The Keeping of Lights will be featured in an interactive exhibition celebrating recent works of the poetry community.

| Author: Alexander Romanovich

| Publisher: Independently Published

| Publication Date: Jan 07, 2019

| Number of Pages: 63 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 1793062692

| ISBN-13: 9781793062697

Poems showing dogs true love and how they heal and save us while we help and love them too

| Author: Paula Puchala Timpson

| Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform

| Publication Date: Jan 22, 2018

| Number of Pages: 76 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 1984077392

| ISBN-13: 9781984077394

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0798/8215/8385/files/9781984077394__87202_dc403bd4-1ab3-459c-bb82-078f1f0fb131.jpg?v=1716022938
9781365648182
A Poem For All My People

| Author: Carmen Alicia Murguia, Illustrations By Gabriela Riveros

| Publisher: Lulu.Com

| Publication Date: Jan 04, 2017

| Number of Pages: 34 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 1365648184

| ISBN-13: 9781365648182

Anthology of poetry.

| Author: Mar? The author has created a homage to the traveler in all of us, bringing the reader with him on his journey, making us taste, feel, and smell the multilayered experience that is travel and knowing a different place and time. In her first collection of poetry, Emily Hunt inverts the ordinary: How to bring a new figure close / was like taking a globe, turning it once / and placing it back on its pedestal. Using spare diction and imagery, Hunt imagines a new world "so close to what the world is like" that the reader might feel like a humble visitor to our planet Earth. Though often elegiac, DARK GREEN is alive, inviting its readers to deeply sense this poet's tender and singular investigations. "With incantatory wit, Emily Hunt writes poems that could be stories, or stories that might be poems. DARK GREEN starts with a farewell, but grows in power, depth and range from page to page; like snowflakes or violins, no two poems are the same, but each displays visual acuity married to a gift from a different fairy, the power to reveal under the reader's skin vast pools of hitherto untapped emotion. Reading Emily Hunt's DARK GREEN one feels things one couldn't have before imagined possible." Kevin Killian "Like Auden's, Emily Hunt's precision and bold intelligence discover what ought to be discovered on a daily basis; her poems say what suffering is and what it does; they say we are all of us in all we do. From DARK GREEN we get a hint at how to register the almost invisible nuances that fuel our spirits, minds and heart." Dara Wier "Emily Hunt is an accomplished lyricist, quiet ethnographer, and kooky observer of inner turbulences. She's also a remarkable poet who has written a stunning first book. Her poems are spiky, wheeling, and fierce; a voice continuously evolving, speaking directly from her own haunted yet intimate, 2000-now. In ESSAY STANZAS, Thomas Meyer begins modestly by warning the reader: "This won't amount to much." Each of the four poems in this book follow the imagination of the poet through his attempts to map out the human drama as it's reflected in natural elements. Using myths and fairy tales, the Bible and Shakespeare, silver-screen starlets and ancient love songs, Meyer assembles his influences with true compassion, to aid him in pointing out the mysteries of the physical and emotional world around him. The poet's wisdom shines through at every turn: "My shadow, I used to think / backed me up from behind. / Now I realize / I am my shadow's human shield." "Thomas Meyer is a living master. In ESSAY STANZAS, he innovates a form in three of the four poems that make up this magnificent book, compressing Orphic oracle, Faustian apocalypse, oneiric pageant, invented fable, wisdom literature, cryptic joke, disturbing aphorism, epigrammic wit and nervous ruin into sequences of thematically linked stanzas on the weather, relationships, or enlightenment, for instance. The fourth poem, 'Airs Waters Places, ' reveals Meyer's powers completely: a nuptial hymn in a high style as antique as it is absolutely present. No living master is so hidden as Meyer but there's none whose poems we should read more urgently. 'My heart / can't help overhearing / what they say, and try as I might, I / can't stop listening.'" Peter O'Leary" 9780988464353 0988464357 0 BOOK American poetry NOT_MATURE http://books.google.com/books/content?id=7k9MngEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&source=gbs_api en

| Author: Thomas Meyer

| Publisher: The Song Cave

| Publication Date: Nov 01, 2014

| Number of Pages: 140 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 0988464357

| ISBN-13: 9780988464353

Poetry. The poems in Sara Nicholson's THE LIVING METHOD imaginatively grasp the raw materials of nature, calling the reader to the "outer limits of the dark," where one notices the music of the woods and gardens while searching for "the youngest photo of the night." These poems explore and create various orders of images, a mysterious taxonomy of words and scraps of phrases that revive what in lesser hands would remain dying metaphors. Here, in her debut collection, a new and singular poetic logic reveals itself, growing tenderly out of the "droning chamber" of the poet's throat, through Google image searches, and from the rich soil of archaic landscapes. "Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky claimed, 'Most directors make films with their eyes; I make films with my testicles.' Sara Nicholson makes poems with her hippocampus, that somewhat mysterious part of the brain that deals with memory and spatial recognition in ways we have yet to understand conclusively. Her poems speak to us directly from somewhere in there: 'A queen will dwell in the radius and eat it//but the circumference/will answer without a refrain.' We can hear a voice at once speaking to us while also thinking aloud to itself. These are poems of inquiry without the presumptuous rhetoric, wonder without the rhapsodic glitz, formal control without the self-congratulatory show tune medley. I've read very few poets of my generation who have so decidedly shrugged off pretense and posturing. She's pure hippocampus, navigating the external world from deep within the internal. We hear a voice speaking to us, but that voice comes from a crowded place, amid a thousand thoughts we do not hear. Her poems have no angle. They touch on the occult and hermetic but do not wear them as a shroud. They reach out from the radius into the radiant." Matthew Henriksen" 9780988464346 0988464349 0 BOOK American poetry NOT_MATURE http://books.google.com/books/content?id=ik_1ngEACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=5&source=gbs_api en

| Author: Sara Nicholson

| Publisher: The Song Cave

| Publication Date: Apr 01, 2014

| Number of Pages: 92 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 0988464349

| ISBN-13: 9780988464346
