Joy Matine is toasted as much if not more than any other living writer by writers who have stopped giving prise for her lack of song, while in a historical setting of WWII she explores another abundant variety of art, of death, of life. Realise, a novel, tells the story of two women who come from that city in their present period 2001, who are writing about another time when that society was almost lost in WWII. Joy Matine and Kelly Delwire are academics, researching a book on the origins of the SAS special forces, charting actions from the Western Desert, Egypt, to the liberation of their city on 25th August 1944. They try to be historically correct while all the time living their own sheltered lives, which gradually become less sheltered, less hidden away, and more open to change as they meet some other interested characters. One of these contributors, a funder of a local history group, is Hari Beacon who owns a public house or pub in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. Their main character in their book about WWII hailed from this same town as Hari, a real person in history, Lt Col. Blair 'Paddy' Mayne commander of the SAS in the desert, later in France and in the final push clearing the oppressive Nazi occupation from Paris. The story of Lt Col. Mayne, and what war can do on the individual soldier is recounted by various narratives, by characters who knew so much and no more. Another character, Finn Connor, fictional, who fought with Mayne in the war, is alive in the present time 2001, but for now he has disappeared. The search begins for him, for his boots, and for what it means to keep on living, even while in bare feet in the present changing times, while new conflicts are emerging. Contemporary and historical, the novel looks at how war changes reality while aspects of the hero, myth and legend seeps into the current lives of those who question their talent and their own lives up to now. Can change be anything significant if left unattended? And is time relative in the end? The reader will see these questions being posed, maybe answered, or not. Time is therefore not linier in the novel. Characters, including Lt Col. Mayne, from the past enter the present to echo and leave traces like voices in a room occupied by Joy Matine and Kelly Delwire. While they explore the past to write of war, they become important to each other and to some others whom they meet on the way.14/04/2019 Colin Reid

| Author: Colin Reid

| Publisher: Independently Published

| Publication Date: Apr 25, 2019

| Number of Pages: 424 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 1095847929

| ISBN-13: 9781095847923
