9780992934019
Reflections On Postmodern Life: Degrees Of Freedom
In the early part of the twenty first century, we are witnessing a society, which despite huge amelioration in living standards and opportunities compared with earlier times still has a high proportion of disenchanted in its population; some of whom have resorted to extreme and pitiless behaviour. This book looks at how society has arrived at this point today and determines the mechanisms used to justify stances and explain social behaviour. The impact of technology, use of medicine, cultural prejudices and the lack of reform in political institutions to reflect the demands from a changing demographic are also assessed. Although, credit has been given to Thatcher and Neoliberal economic policy theorists for triggering a seismic shift that accelerated change in society with emphasise firmly placed on increased individual responsibility and unregulated markets. The truth is western society was always on collision course between the demand for greater individualism and traditional collective constraining mechanisms that coerced order. Rapid liberation from state control for some has come at a high price as social cohesion through acceptance of common values and shared experiences has waned to accommodate a desired maximisation in the advancement in human knowledge and commercial growth. All of which has unintentionally led to a demand for greater personal freedom, rejection of traditional agreed values and a relentless economic dependence on consumerism driven by unregulated super rich global capitalists. In addition, there has been a breakdown in respect for authority and the institutions of the state as we live in a pluralistic society where the only thing people have in common is the demand for the legal right to expect good service regardless of any unforeseen circumstance or act of nature. The acquisition of wealth by any means is now firmly perceived as more important than social duty with mainstream acceptance of the repackaging of greed and moral turpitude as self-sufficiency. Deceptions more than ever oils the wheels to permit control and pragmatic decision-making by a political class divorced from everyday life. However, the state is fighting back to regain lost power as the prime method of civil control is returning to strong intrusive universal law enforcement with social cohesion being maintained through the traditional use of fear of a common enemy. So what degree of freedom can most people really expect in life, does society only evolve through unintentional consequences, and is it driven by emotion and instincts rather than intellect. Is it only a natural state of affairs to expect elites to seek control over the masses? This book asks questions about what really determines society's ethics and freedom choices and does human psychology play a more significant part in social cohesion than rational thought. The philosophy and politics behind post modernity are discussed and related to the real activities of people. The principles and ideas behind authentic living, wellbeing and human rights that have been used to open up the UK for business are also reviewed. Can it really be said that everyone as freedom of choice because society is supposedly no longer controlled and directed by privileged self-declared intellectual elites. Is pluralism a panacea or pathogen for human society?

| Author: David Dow Millar

| Publisher: The Misty Tree

| Publication Date: May 16, 2014

| Number of Pages: 278 pages

| Language: English

| Binding: Paperback

| ISBN-10: 099293401X

| ISBN-13: 9780992934019
