9781792623271
The Coffee Man : Or How To Get Bonked Silly On The Edge Of The Galaxy
A mixed bunch of left-over humans and aliens cum together on the remnants of Earth sometime in the future. She walked past a pointy eared, slim line, off-world fairy type standing on the corner. She had been standing there for about a week now but she never came over for a coffee. I called her over if nothing was happenin but she never moved. Maybe she wasn't too good on the language or her in-ear translator was dead. Most likely the batteries were stuffed they didn't last too long on those things. I got a charger on the counter anybody could use while they were drinkin their coffee. I don't know if she was on the game or a mercenary type as she was covered in bullet belts and an assortment of weapons including an extra long sword hanging over her back. Being a mercenary type she should be covered in body armour but she wasn't wearing too much. She wasn't afraid of all the weird and wacko left overs from the far flung edges of the galaxy who somehow ended up here. For some reason this place attracted what most places didn't want. Maybe it was the slow continuing collapse of everything that had metal in it as the acid rain poured down through out the colony. And the government spent most of its time and resources just tying to keep the peace. She could be waiting for a call or she was supposed to meet up with her dude or she had a contract out on somebody and was waiting for him or her to walk past or something else. You never know round here. Anyway MiMi growled at her as she walked past and I thought 'Holy shit what is she tryin to do.' Maybe MiMi thought she was competition and was trying to scare her into another part of the city. Cats were like that. This pointy eared piece was covered in weapons and MiMi was still trying to scare her off. I always wondered about the intelligence of cats. Anyway this piece didn't flinch and MiMi just kept on walkin.I looked her up and down. She looked normal as normal could be in this forgotten, decrepid part of the universe. Reminded me of the pictures of cat people that sometimes popped up even out here, a couple of hundred years after the old world had collapsed under population pressures and a bunch of other things. Then every left-over outlander that inhabited the far flung edges of the unknown universe had picked the place clean. A lot of them had dropped in to see a dying race and to pick up a wife or two as humans were a pretty versatile bunch. And a few times when tinkering with the old computers, sometimes pictures of off-worlders and beautiful looking cat people and alien type people with pointed ears filled the flickering screen. So most left-over humans and off-worlders who inhabited this colony of steel and decaying concrete buildings, and piles of rubbish kinda took it for granted that the earth was always a meeting place of different alien races. The street was a left over street from before the collapse complete with traffic lights and street lamps that hadn't emitted any light for a couple of centuries. This forgotten corner of the collapse had remained somewhat unscathed by the turmoil that had affected the home planet of the humans. Cities burned and people died, but here a plague had raged through leaving bleached skeletons laying on the road where they had fallen. To be ripped to pieces by whatever meat eating animals and birds the humans hadn't been able to catch to eat, and what was left turned to dust to be blown away by the unforgiving years. And now weeds grew through the cracks in the 200 plus year old tarmac that still looked like it would have just before the collapse. It is amazing how long something will last when there is very little wheeled traffic. Acid rain had somehow managed to keep nature under control.

• Author: A. P.
