Backpacker Amber arrives in Berlin as the global pandemic threatens the freedom that defines the modern city. Funding her trip working in aged care, she seeks to embrace every corner of the city. Coronavirus restrictions begin to compromise her sightseeing, and border closures force her into an extended stay. Her Berlin experience becomes centred around a nursing home resident whose story reflects the post-war history of Berlin. Marta lived through the city's destruction in World War II. She grew up under the restrictive East German regime. She escaped across the Berlin Wall in her twenties. After touring the world as an entertainer, she returned to West Berlin in the 1970's, discovering a new, vibrant, prosperous city but only after the fall of the Wall in 1989 had the circle turned in full.The city of Berlin is a living, breathing entity. It has endured the worst of human history, learnt the lessons, and evolved into a city envied the world over. The parallels in the experiences of two women at the opposite ends of life show Berlin as the unique, magical metropolis that captivates locals and tourists alike.
