They preserved history through their suprisingly detailed and insightful letters [mostly to their father, Chester Martin in Williamstown, Vermont]. William H. Martin was a second lieutenant in the Fourth Vermont Infantry, and Francis S. Martin was a private in the Second Vermont Infantry.
