THE GOOD SCREAM is a step-by-step guide to healing the Self by eliciting and validating healthy expression of need for love, pain, fear, anger and joy (love). Initial injury to the child's wholeness is partly through repression or distortion of these feelings. Repair of emotional communication offers the most direct restoration of wholeness. THE GOOD SCREAM is the only book to help a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, social worker, or student in these disciplines in accessing the earliest emotions and the residues of harmful parenting. Repair of the Self is generally rapid and deep. It is also completely safe when carried out in the warm, protective environment emphasized in THE GOOD SCREAM. These methods are applicable to all neuroses and character disorders. They are not useful for psychotics, although occasionally a withdrawn (schizoid) patient erroneously diagnosed as "schizophrenic" is rapidly brought back to full vitality. The gateway to the methods of THE GOOD SCREAM is often cognitive, behavioral, or suggestive (light hypnosis), as fully explained. Psychoanalysis is respected, for which note the commendation of a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine on the back cover. A brief history of the methods is given in Appendix B. The ambience and methods developed in THE GOOD SCREAM cannot and must not be confused with those of books collectively described as "about scream therapy." The authors of those books for diverse reasons did not want to teach what they were doing, which was sometimes good, sometimes useless, and not infrequently harmful. A great potential for psychotherapy was largely dissipated as well as a means of understanding core features of human nature. THE GOOD SCREAM guides a professional in undertaking these powerful methods or using them to intensify his own approach.
