Inspired by Harriet Tubman on of Mirthell's fondest memories was at the age of ten when she had partaken in her elementary schools assembly meeting during Black History Month. Her person of choice to write about was the late Harriet Tubman. It was her first essay to write at the age of ten, and her reason for choosing Harriet is because all the other students had chosen to write about Martin Luther King. Proud of her afro American heritage, and being born on June 19th which is known as Juneteenth, the official date when slavery had ended, she felt compelled to write about the one person who saved over a thousand slaves - A woman name Harriet Tubman Not only did Mirthell write an essay, but recited this poem as well: Harriet! Harriet! born a slave Work for your master, from the cradle to your grave Harriet cleans, Harriet sweeps Harriet rocks the child to sleep Harriet here tells about the promise land How the Lord led Moses over Egypt's sand How Pharaoh's heart, was hard as stone How the Lord told Moses, he was not alone Harriet said...believe in the Lord Harriet said...believe in me Harriet said...brothers and sisters Where going to be free!
