Ancoats in the 1920s is a wretched industrial slum near Manchester, whose inhabitants, scraping a living, have no interest in education. But young Thomas Davies, a schoolteacher, thinks differently. His runny-nosed, ignorant, violent pupils are going to learn about history, art and the outside world if it's the last thing he does.
