Jessie Hall's home life is dysfunctional. Behavioral disorders plague the family and everyone feels the mother's bitterness. Upon leaving the military, the family moves to a predominantly black neighborhood. Jessie feels like a stranger both at home and in her community when she is ironically bussed to a white school. Jessie meets a girl her own age-Myra Fisher. They have opposing differences, but Jessie is relieved to have found a friend. She's also intrigued by Myra's claim that there is a ghost in her house. Everything terrifies Jessie. Newscasts, headlines of racial riots, and infamous murders plague her everyday life. She is petrified of the early morning darkness, when she helps her mother with a paper route. She's horrified, when she hears about the local slayings of three young girls. The spirit, however, is not what she expects. Jessie forms a strange connection with the phantom child. As she copes with prejudice, family crisis, and unsolved murders, she discovers an unexpected bond in the lost spirit. Will their connection be enough to see her through the challenges ahead?
