Threads of Steel is the tale of Bettina Dawson, a young girl who, having just attended her mother’s funeral, is at the mercy of her work-shy, drunken, shiftless stepfather and his cruel, mean-spirited mother. In 1931 Great Britain was still suffering the impact of the Great Depression and it was a difficult time for a fifteen- year-old girl and her three younger siblings to be bereft and alone. Bettina finds help from her aunt and uncle who are a kind, well respected couple who have no children of their own. This engaging story takes the reader into the northern countryside, to an iron and steel town and to quilting with the Durham miners’ wives.
