Buford, Quirt, Rufus and Smith are what you would call holdup men. They make their way in this old world by relieving others of what is rightfully theirs and appropriating it to themselves. It is tough work and times are hard and sometimes it just doesn't go the way they want it to. Like when they come upon something in a clearing.
