This book fills a gap in the literature by setting concerns for food security in the context of global food governance in the twenty-first century. It highlights the systemic inadequacies of the present food system and of the dominant strategies for achieving food security. Examining the post-World War II history of addressing food issues, the work draws lessons from experience, tracing the evolution of three strongly interconnected factors: the institutions in which global decision-making on food security has been exercised, the paradigms on which their strategies and actions have been based, the actors that have influenced decision-making and the interests they represent. It analyses the dynamic links between different levels of decision-making on food security, from the household to the global, and highlights key global issues. Finally, it examines the responses of the international community to the food crisis and suggests ways in which the reform of the global policy forum, the Committee on World Food Security, can address the deficiencies of the present system. It closes by identifying some of the challenges that need to be addressed for this potential to be fulfilled. This book will be of interest to students of food security, global governance, development studies and critical security studies in general.
