In Rousseau's classic Emile he sets out the ideas of education of the whole person, and how reasoning, and the development of character and moral sense are integral to the education of a person as a whole, providing them with the self-mastery and virtue to tackle any issue that faces them. This book extends and expands the ground that Rousseau explores in Emile and considers the less well known of his publications to provide and analysis of Rousseau's position on the politics of education, public education, the state as an educator and the education of the family, arguing that his thoughts on the field were much wider and more sophisticated than the ideas presented in Emile imply.
