This book has two objectives. The first is to give some insight into how development economics can be viewed from an empirical perspective. The second is to introduce the tools that will enable the student to carry out empirical work in development. Much can be gained from teaching development from a quantitative perspective. The topics typically addressed in a course of development would include: Who are the poor? How is poverty measured and how can it be reduced? Does globalisation impoverish the poor? What is the role of human capital in growth and poverty reduction? Are neo-liberal policies increasing poverty? How does gender impact on poverty? These questions are often taught without reference to a course on quantitative methods but the objective here is to show that an empirical approach can advance understanding of these questions.
