The story of a pioneer who was prominent in Ballarat Vic, Grafton NSW, and the Gold Coast from 1853 to 1887. During the eureka rebellion era at Ballarat, while establishing a well known enterprise, he was also instrumental in the restoration of law and order after the uprising and the establishment of the municipality and many of the local civic institutions. At Grafton, he is known for establishing the first brewery as well as playing an important role in the local sugar industry. In Southern Queensland, while also an important figure in the establishment of the sugar industry, he is also known for his involvement in Queensland politics and the early development of Southport. Standing up for the rights of independent and small sugar producers and free trade, he is portrayed as a product of modern Scottish commercialism and liberalism through his background and upbringing in an Ayrshire tenant farming family.
