Valentine And The Devil

Valentine is a medieval guardsman, a member of the Night Watch. They are tasked with patrolling the dark streets of their City. One evening they come across a creature who looks like the classical description of a devil, complete with horns and red skin. The devil is an alien, a member of a trading party seeking new markets. The Inquisition steps in and imprisons the aliens, subjecting them to torture. The Night Watch frees them but are forced to flee the City. They agree to join the trader's ship, discovering too late it is a spaceship. Sailing between stars, they grapple with changes to their world view as they meet other aliens and new technologies. Enemies maroon them on a planet with little hope of rescue. They make their way across the planet and finally re-join their spaceship after a murderous encounter with their original devil. En route, they deal with bandits, fanatics, assassins, and thugs. Fortunately, Valentine and the Night Watch are very good at being thugs.
