Marriage And Family Therapy: A Practice-Oriented Approach

As I think back over the years that I have taught graduate students family therapy, what always comes to mind is the excitement on the faces of my students when they learned a new family therapy mode and it clicked! They learned theory with a little eagerness. They watched videos with glee and I gave them examples of how each of the models worked. They asked me whether certain models worked for certain situations. They debated with each other about the importance of acknowledging emotions. Some even wondered how family therapists from the 1950's could possibly create a model for families in the twenty first century. There were many views expressed, and curious faces that needed assurance. They seemed satisfied for the most part, until they entered a therapy room with a family.
