IntroductionOn Tuesday, September 7, 1976 Calvin Arthur began his fourth grade year at Washington Elementary. A public school which is located in a mixed ethnic city of Wilmington, Delaware. Every student walked or was driven to school by their parents. There were no buses. There were also no white boards, smart boards, computers, or cell phones. Even without all of the technology, this book describes an uncanny resemblance to today's 4th grade public school education. The mode of teaching and learning are different but a lot of the socialization issues are very similar. In Calvin's formative fourth grade year, many good and questionable social actions among his peers and teachers took place. Today's fourth graders' social challenges are also very real.Calvin is a mild mannered caucasion boy, who wants to blend in and at the same time he really wants everyone to like him. Hopefully you will feel what the characters are feeling and see what Calvin sees. Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster as Calvin and his classmates navigate from start to finish through their 4th grade year at Washington Elementary in 1976. They will be learning "Humiliation, empathy, teasing, jealousy, humbleness, kindness, integrity, cheating, frustration, anger," and more. These subjects are not often a part of the normal curriculum in any school but they do certainly exist among the students. Calvin learns much like we all do/did both from the school and his peers' curriculums. You will relate, learn, be sad, laugh and enjoy the up and down journey, "Through Calvin Arthur's 4th grade eyes."
