It begins in Madrid, Spain during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, where Michael is so far removed from the struggle, he thought himself more Spanish than a black American. He eventually migrates to a junior high school in the Deep South suffering through the first year of "forced busing" in the name of desegregation. That was followed by graduation from a Colorado high school with him as the only black male in his senior class. Those disparate circumstances left Michael ostracized and alone.
