A gendarme with an EK-47 patrolled the lengthening line as voters inched toward two tables manned by four poll workers. Justine recognized an elderly lady who sold nkoumou at the market presenting her national identity card. The first poll worker located the old woman's name on a list and ticked it off. The next poll worker handed her two ballots. She proceeded to the second table where a muscular young man showed her how to mark the ballots. Justine took another step forward as the line advanced, certain only that she would not cast her first-ever vote for Antoine Badinga, the man who had tried to kill her.
