It is also, of course, the story of her people, without whom she could not exist. She begins as a young pioneer, adapts to the war effort and then to the peace and the arrival of jets. She longs for independence and becomes a player in the business world. At the end of the book she is an old lady declining in an asylum, her dignity stripped away.
