A young English woman moved to Africa with her husband, a former pilot from the Royal Air Force in 1927. They moved to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to grow tobacco as part of a homesteading program sponsored by the British Government. She gave birth alone in hut, faced crocodiles and hippos and lived in a hut with no electricity or running water. She dealt with crop failure and innuerable punctures to their tire on a 1200 mile journey in a Model T Ford for new opportunities in mining. Her children suffered from malaria and whooping cough, and she asks, "Were we made to set out on this journey?"
