The Moszkowski family was one of the fortunate ones. Thanks to a combination of courage, coincidence, and chutzpah, they escaped from western Poland even as Nazi planes were bombarding cities in their path. The family suffered hardship and deprivation during the decade-long journey that followed but avoided the horrors of the concentration camps where millions of European Jews perished. This is the story of the authors' childhood and youth, from being deported to a Siberian labor camp in 1940 to growing up in Tanzania as the only Jewish family in a Catholic refugee camp. Sofia (Zosia) was just a toddler when the family fled Poland, but Ada (Dunia), seven years older, acutely remembers the day when Russian soldiers knocked at the door of their temporary home in Czortków. Two other voices are vital to the story. Translations of audio tapes their father recorded in Polish describe parts of the family's journey through Poland, Russia, and into Iran. Quoted excerpts from their mother's memoir, published in 1987, fill in gaps in her daughters' childhood memories. One more character in this story is silent but important. It is that of Józia, the devoted housekeeper and nanny, a Polish Catholic woman who remarkably stayed with the family and proved to be a pillar of strength throughout the most arduous parts of their journey.
