The Ashbourne Saga is a series of fourteen teleplays about the Shakespeare Authorship Question, using the Ashbourne Portrait of William Shakespeare as the apple of discord." The hero is Charles Wisner Barrell (1885-1974), a self-taught independent scholar and one of the founders (1939) of the American Branch of the Shakespeare Fellowship. The Ashbourne Saga follows the portrait from its discovery in London in 1847, through its x-ray and infra-red examination by Barrell in 1937, through Barrell's writing of a breakthrough article about the painting in 1939, the article's publication in Scientific American in 1940, and Barrell's subsequent lawsuit against Giles E. Dawson of the Folger Shakespeare Library, over disparaging and potentially libelous remarks that Dawson had made about Barrell in a private letter. In the course of the work, the argument is advanced that the true author of the works of William Shakespeare was Edward de Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, an illustrious poet and patron of the arts who flourished during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I."--Back cover.
