Atticus marries his girlfriend Noel to avoid military duty, but his happiness is interrupted by a letter from the Selective Service. The forces-at-play have conspired to have him drafted. Selected by the Marines, Atticus is renamed "Mr. Attitude" by a drill instructor exasperated to Atticus' lack of enthusiasm, and the nickname sticks. After numerous breaches in discipline, his commanding officer sends him to Vietnam. There he learns the hard truths about war, where the unexpected is the norm and mostly bad things happen. When Mr. Attitude comes home, it's to an estranged wife and a changed world where he simply doesn't fit in. And while his instincts have helped him survive the physical aspect of war, nothing seems to help him face its psychological aftermath.
