MURDER AND RAPE AT A REMOTE MILITARY BASE. . . Conflicts tear a defense counsel as he learns his client is innocent, or is he? It is the height of the Cold War. An Air Force Bomb Wing is stationed near Oscoda in northern Michigan. A brutal rape and murder of a local girl shocks the community. A witness identifies the killer as a black male, which can only mean that he's from the base; one of the men in blue. Two weeks later, the Blue Scorpion strikes again; savagely raping and murdering a local waitress. The evidence all points to one suspect, a black airman, George Torrance. Oscoda's Mayor insists on a searing notice sent to all black airmen to avoid local women; the Air Force commander agrees. The court martial panel is selected to insure the guilt and execution of Torrance who insists he's innocent. A veteran JAG trial lawyer is flown in to prosecute. The appointed defense counsel is the least experienced judge advocate lawyer on base, Lt. Tony Jeffries. As the trial progresses, Jeffries waivers between believing that his client is innocent and having a gnawing sense that he is guilty. The court's verdict stuns everyone, as do the events that quickly follow. This is a taut, compelling story of military justice at a remote base where the usual rules of evidence and burdens of proof may or may not apply and the reader, like Jeffries, will wonder until the very end whether the verdict is just or not. While fictionalized, the story is based on a true event.
