It is well known that Jane Austen included many familiar characters and scenes in her novels. Readers familiar with both her life and works can connect the two, but attempts to identify the inspiration for her best-loved characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, have failed. That, of course, does not mean that there were no such individuals. Jane began her early novels between the ages of eighteen and twenty, and very few details of her adolescent life remain. But suppose Jane, seventeen, accompanied her friend, Mrs Anne Lefroy, on a visit to Maybridge in the summer of 1793. She could have met the delightful brown-haired girl village girl, the tall, proud young gentleman, and his affable red-haired friend. She might have attended dances and balls, spent the fall season in Bath, and visited grand estates. No doubt romances would have developed, but they would hardly proceed without some share of difficulty. They so rarely do.The Meeting Elizabeth - Pride and Prejudice, Revised Second Edition, contains corrections and revisions noted by some reviewers who proved to be more observant than my former proofreader.
