The novel recounts the journey of the Clown, who, after a mysterious incident, finds himself in a place called Plonace (anagram for "No place"). He first encounters a voice which tells him the reason for his presence in Plonace: to seek answer for the greatest question of his life - the meaning of his existence. The voice does not give him any specific instruction but simply tells the Clown to keep going and assures him that he will eventually find someone who can provide him with this answer. Leaving the voice behind, the Clown continues with his journey and on his way, meets Franz - a writer friend of his, an extremely condescending wealthy man and a homeless man while he is waiting for his train, a female Clown on the train to Tangiarie, a man locked in a mental asylum called Parrot who claims that he is in fact a parrot, a kid in a forest, and finally Death with a capital D on a boat. With each of these enigmatic figures, the Clown converses at length on various subjects, but on a whole, these conversations are philosophical in nature. In the end, the Clown reaches his destination and reencounters the mysterious voice which he met in the beginning. Through their exchange, it becomes clear that there would be no definite answer for the Clown's quest for meaning, even though thanks to the voice, the Clown eventually comes face to face with his true nature. The story ends with the Clown pondering over the three options given by the voice regarding his future course of action - How does he want to live on?
