Gaglione's Poison: A Medieval Surgeon's Involvement In The Papal Succession During The Avignon Papacy.

Master Surgeon, Flavio Gaglione, is coerced into poisoning the beloved Cardinal Fournier of Lyon in a political battle for succession to the Papacy in Avignon. To save himself from excommunication and possible execution, Gaglione escapes to Saragossa disguised as a Jewish merchant. Forced to serve as a military surgeon during the war between Castile and Aragon, Gaglione distinguishes himself in the service of King Peter the Cruel.
