In ancient Rome, famine has devastated the working classes, and revolt is in the air. The Volscians declare war on Rome, and a proud soldier named Martius miraculously defeats the enemy, and takes the city of Corioles. Martius is given the honorary name Coriolanus, and is offered the powerful position of consul. In order to become consul, Martius must dress humbly, and beg the approval of the common people. Will Martius be able to overcome his disdain of the lower classes long enough to gain the power he seeks? Or will his rivals succeed in turning the voice of the people against him?
