The Konnou Crisis

Throughout Bougainville the scars of the crisis, ended formally by the 2001 Peace Agreement, are still evident and there is not a single person that is unaffected. The Konnou Constituency in the Buin District of South Bougainville has struggled longer than most places to find peace in the post-crisis era. In his first book, The Konnou Crisis, Benjamin Heribeths gives a firsthand account of the conflict in Konnou, which ignited long ago over ideological differences. This continued well beyond the signing of the Peace Agreement as internal struggles for power and control usurped the traditional structures of society and the relative peace they brought. The Konnou Crisis is a remarkable story, but one that is familiar to many people in South Bougainville. The tension, confusion, uncertainty and horrors experienced by Heribeths are the same that were faced by the many people in that area, who were innocent bystandsers searching for peace.
