Boomers, grandchildren of Boomers and anyone wondering how Boomers in the Midwest grew up, will find this book interesting. This book shared the lessons learned during walks with a single mother and her 5 year old son, down the Main Street of a small farming community in Central Illinois back in the 1950's. There is drama from a 5 year olds view of things, charming characters that made the town their home and descriptions of events of that time that helped mold many of that Boomer era. Woven into the stories of walking down Main Street with Mom are humorous dramatic instances where trouble or curiosity causes some level of discomfort. Mom often has to remedy the dilemma and her son would have to pay the consequences. We are able to see all the City folks in their professional work environment; we can see what they did and how they interacted with people. The author reflects on the times lost and when he was able to go back as say thank you, and when he was not. The regrets in not trying harder to reconnect and to simply tell folks, they are remembered, and they were great. There is a separation, divorce and step-parents, but dwelling on these topics was not the focus. Rather they are fabric within the stories and make the basis for learning how to cope, moving on and looking for the best possible outcome. Readers will have a fun entertaining experience with this book and will chuckle at the youthful presentation of the drama. Readers may learn about the past but most likely will share similar stories, memories and smiles from the good old days. We have all come a long way but we should not forgot how we got here and how much our parents, family and community helps us along.
