The recommended first step as a solver is to look for every instance of these in the grid, and write them in. These will help start your solving process. Sometimes the given letters will be immediately helpful and you will be able to deduce other words straight away. Sometimes they will offer less immediate help. In those instances many solvers look for the number that occurs the most time, in the knowledge that this is often the E, and if not then very often it is either T or A, the other two most common letters in English. You may also want to look for unusual patterns - for instance where a number appears several times within a placement this usually narrows down the options quite heavily.
