Darcy, as a young man, falls in love with his best friend's sister, Amelia, and writes her a poem. The poem does not have the intended effect - indeed, it seems to put her off. However, he continues to write, and when he meets Elizabeth begins to write poems to her - but the Muse is a demanding mistress, and the more Darcy gets into poetry, the more problems arise in his relationship with Elizabeth.
