Marianne Mandeville was kind to the gypsies living on her estate, giving them food and shelter. All they could give back was a prayer, but it would be a good one. After Marianne loses her husband in an equestrian accident, she is so distraught that she attempts to die by forcing a similar accident. She lay unconscious. Coincidentally, there is a nearby carriage accident, with no survivors other than an infant girl. The gypsies observe this, and place the baby in Marianne¿s arms. Marianne regains consciousness, and discovers the baby. Her mothering instinct gives her a new reason to live. Nothing is known about the girl¿s identity. Her name is presumed to be Georgiana, based on a sheet of music composed and dedicated to her, found in the wreckage of the carriage. It takes well over a decade, but the composition is the link that reunites Georgiana with her father, music professor James Austen. Marianne and James are both single, James having lost his wife in the carriage accident. They marry. The end result is a new, whole family of three. All those events could be explained as coincidence. The gypsies believe it was returned kindness through divine intervention. You decide which.
