Alec & Flora The Story of a family spans more than a century from prior to the Civil War to after 1950. The story begins and ends in the small town of East Bend, North Carolina. Bennett Rueben Martin, a Confederate soldier is killed in action with General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and is 'lost", never to come home. Some months later, his wife Martha "Millie" Truelove, dies of grief - a love story - leaving their two young sons orphans of the war. The youngest, Alec, grows to become successful and catches the fancy of Flora Poindexter who proclaimed as a child that, someday, she was going to marry Alec Martin. She did, at age fifteen - another love story - that soon begins their large family. Tragedies and heartaches, along with successes and happy times, are the times of their lives. Alec becoming a wealthy merchant attracts the interest of a local church whose congregation wants a new brick church, and events follow Alec's death that leaves Flora homeless and near penniless.
