My brother, sister and I had the good fortune to grow up with two loving mother figures in our lives. My mother was youthful, energetic and full of fun. My grandmother, whom we called Nanan, was kind, loving and clever. Both were extremely strong women and I understood both to be extremely devout Catholics. I was wrong. My mother was a devout Catholic and my grandmother and her family had been hiding their true beliefs for hundreds of years, hoping eventually a generation would be born into a world where they could live openly and in peace.
